QUESTION NO 15 : What is regeneration ? Explain its types.

  • Regeneration : Regrowth in an injured region.
    • First studied in Hydra by Abraham Trembley in 1740.
  • Two types :
  • Morphallaxis : The whole body grows from a small fragment.
    • Examples: Hydra and Planaria.
    • In Hydra, each piece of a cut individual can regenerate lost parts and develop into a new individual, retaining original polarity (oral ends develop tentacles, aboral ends produce basal discs).
  • Epimorphosis : Replacement of lost body parts.
  • Two types :
    • Reparative regeneration : Only certain damaged tissue can be regenerated.
      • Example: Human beings (liver tissue).
    • Restorative regeneration : Severed body parts can develop.
      • Examples: Starfish, tail of wall lizard.
